Facing a worsening energy crisis, in the winter of 2022 WWCE launched a new project that set out to support households in Wiltshire struggling with spiralling costs.
Devised by our carbon reduction champion, in its first year the ‘Keeping Warm This Winter’ scheme helped over 360 local people during 16 pop up energy advice cafes. The project was so successful that it was shortlisted for Community Energy England’s Fuel Poverty Action award and recognised by Michelle Donelan MP for its positive impact.
WWCE brought the programme back for 2023/24 with a mission to help more people to reduce their household energy use and save money.
During 18 sessions hosted in conjunction with Wiltshire’s network of food banks and other community groups, Jessica was once again able to help over 300 people – many of whom live in rural areas and have no other access to energy advice or further support. The project caught the attention of regional media and was profiled by BBC Radio Wiltshire during an ‘energy special’ programme.
At her pop up advice cafes, Jessica demonstrates practical, low-cost energy efficiency measures and answers questions on a range of topics including draught-proofing, reducing damp and mould, and insulating homes. She also helps refer people to Warm and Safe Wiltshire for further support, signposting those who may be eligible for emergency help or grants to allow them to install larger efficiency measures, including insulation or a more efficient boiler.
